James joined Gilbert Walker as a research and litigation assistant in July 2024. Following the completion of his degree and admission to the bar in 2025, he rejoined the firm as an Associate.
While at university, James undertook internships with a large commercial firm, criminal prosecution firm and criminal defence barristers. He represented the University of Auckland in the Australian Law Students Association negotiation competition in Sydney, Australia, after winning the University of Auckland competition. He was also a managing editor of the Auckland University Law Review in 2023, a journal in which he later published an article on facial recognition technology and criminal procedure.
With a degree in Pharmacology, James also tutored first- and second-year students in biomedical science, pharmacy, and medicine.
