Martin graduated from Victoria University in 2002 with an LLB with First Class Honours and a BSc majoring in Chemistry. Martin won a New Zealand Law Review prize, as one of the top three students in his year, and the Richard Wild Cup, as winner of the Victoria University mooting competition. Martin was admitted to the bar in 2003. He worked for Russell McVeagh in litigation from 2003 to 2007, becoming a Senior Solicitor in 2006. He then took his LLM at Cambridge University, graduating with First Class Honours. Martin received the B R D Clarke Prize as the top LLM student, the Chancellor's Medal for English Law, and the Gareth Jones Prize for Restitution from the Faculty of Law. He also received the Lyndon-Stanford Prize and a Leonard Coling Scholarship from his college, Sidney Sussex. Following completion of his LLM Martin, took up a Pegasus Scholarship to spend the 2008 northern summer in barristers' chambers in London, before returning to New Zealand to join Gilbert Walker in October 2008.
