Matthew has acted for financial institutions, companies, corporate trustees and individuals in a broad range of commercial disputes, including claims for breach of trust, professional indemnity, breach of contract, and disputes arising out of corporate financings and restructurings. Matthew graduated from the University of Auckland in 1997 with an LL.B. (Hons.) and a B.A. He won a number of prizes, including a Senior Prize in Law and the Geoffrey Powell Memorial prize for advocacy. Matthew served as a Judges' Clerk at the High Court in Auckland from 1997 until 1998. From 1998 to 1999, he took his LL.M. at New York University as a Fulbright Scholar and N.Y.U. Hauser Global Scholar. After completing his studies, he worked for Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C. From 2000 to 2003, he was an Associate at Davis Polk & Wardwell, where he practised US law from the firm's London office. Matthew then joined the litigation department of Clifford Chance in London, where he was a Senior Associate. He returned to New Zealand and joined Gilbert Walker in 2007. Matthew has been admitted to practise law in New Zealand, New York, and England and Wales.
